Phia and the Future of Fashion Retail: A Gen Z Shift in Progress
By Success Okwu
Shopping for the things we love can feel hard, expensive, and honestly, like a total waste of time. You scroll through your favorite app—again and again—and still can’t find the best deal or something that feels right.
If online shopping feels more like a chore than a joy these days, you’re not imagining it. But that’s about to change—thanks to a new app called Phia that's flipping everything we thought we knew about shopping.
Traditional online shopping has turned into endless scrolling through identical options, where you might even find prices that don’t match the quality. Half the time, you still don’t get the best deal on what you actually want.
But now, a new generation is aiming for something better—shopping that feels personal, sustainable, and actually joyful.
Phia, a new fashion-tech web browser app introduced by Phoebe Gates (the youngest child of Bill and Melinda French Gates) and Ms. Gates’s former roommate Sophia Kianni, is reshaping how we find fashion. Unlike traditional shopping apps, Phia curates sustainable, high-quality brands all in one place—making it easier for users to discover great products and fair prices without the endless scrolling.
One standout feature of Phia is this, when users tap the "Should I Buy This?" button on the Phia browser extension, they get an instant price check. Phia tells them whether the price is fair, overpriced, or if there are better alternatives out there—saving time, money, and frustration.
When Shopping Stopped Feeling Exciting and Started Feeling Like a Chore
Most times, you open your favorite shopping app. You scroll past endless pages of bags, dresses, gadgets. Ten minutes pass. Then twenty. Yet everything looks the same, the prices don’t add up, and somehow the joy of searching for something special just disappears. Just like that.
An online consumer survey of over 5,500 shoppers across 12 countries by Software Advice revealed that when searching for products online, most consumers are met with far too many unhelpful results—including sponsored ads, irrelevant listings, or inaccurate product matches. Only 34% of online shoppers who begin their search on search engines, retailer websites, or ecommerce marketplaces end up making a final purchase.
Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice—Why More Is Less, says it simply: an abundance of options can overwhelm us, making it harder to choose and leaving us less satisfied with our decisions. For most online shoppers, deciding which option to choose from becomes its own kind of exhaustion.
Maybe shopping isn't broken because of the clothes. Maybe it's broken because of how it overwhelms us—how endless choices drain the joy right out of finding something you love.
The Young Voices Behind Phia
Phoebe Gates, 22, alongside her Stanford University roommate Sophia Kianni, 23, a climate activist created the new e-commerce tool called Phia—a name that combines both of their own. Their love for fashion and their passion for using technology to make shopping smarter brought the vision to life: a shopping tool that uses AI to find the best prices on fashion, catering directly to customer needs to make finding the best deal effortless.
As reported by People, the co-founders describe Phia as “like Google Flights for fashion—an AI-powered tool that compares prices across 40,000+ retail and secondhand sites in seconds. No ads, no endless searching—just the best options in one click. Think of it as your personal shopping sidekick, always tagging along on your phone or laptop, making sure you never overpay.”
Most new apps are built to make shopping faster. Phia was built to make it better.
In a world stuffed with ads and endless options, Phia isn’t just saving people time—it’s bringing back a little joy to the way we find and buy what we love.
A New Generation’s Mindset: Shopping Smarter
There was a time when shopping just meant chasing whatever trend that was hot on various social media platforms
But now, It’s different.
For a growing generation, it’s about meaning—real meaning behind every purchase.
Sustainability, Personalization and actually connecting with what you buy.
According to First Insight, 62% of Gen Z shoppers prefer to buy from sustainable brands, and 73% are willing to pay more for sustainable products. This shows a strong commitment to eco-friendly practices among younger consumers.
Another report by Capital One Shopping reveals that 79% of Generation Z consumers consider sustainability when choosing which brands to purchase. Gen Z shoppers are more thoughtful, often taking their time to research a product before buying it. They are reshaping retail by prioritizing values over convenience.
Phia taps directly into this mindset. It offers curated, AI-powered shopping experiences that emphasize sustainability and personalization—making it easier for Gen Z to shop with intention.
Because maybe smarter shopping isn’t about saving pennies.
Maybe it’s about finding something that feels good, long after you hit "buy." That’s what Gen Z cares about—and that’s exactly what Phia offers.
Shopping isn't supposed to make us feel exhausted, or leave us regretting every purchase we make. It should make us feel good about the decisions we choose.
Phia isn't just fixing prices or search results. It's helping a generation find a smarter way to shop—one that feels fulfilling, more intentional, and a whole lot more human.
